Homeland Security - Physical Perimeter Security Walls

water treatment plantPrior to 9/11 physical perimeter security for public works plants and facilities was designed to keep children and others from harming themselves via contact with dangerous machinery and electrical voltage. Typical measures usually called for locked and gated chain link fences topped by barbed wire. After 9/11 public works and utilities officials were forced to recognized that this level of security does little to deter the entry of terrorist determined to sabotage, pollute, or disable essential municipal infrastructure components such as electrical substations, pump stations, or water treatment plants.

The American Water Works Association (AWWA) estimates that America’s 55,000 public water systems need to spend approximately $1.6 billion immediately to improve security measures.

The recent Senate Task Force Report on Homeland Security stated:: "The President has reported that diagrams of public water systems were discovered in Al-Qaeda camps in Afghanistan, and officials seized water supply diagrams from suspected Al-Qaeda members in Denver.

electric power substationPower plants and sub-stations are equally vulnerable to terrorist activities. The Northeast electric power grid failure of 2003 highlights the sensitivity of our power distribution system. Congress recently rated physical security at US nuclear plants: "B". Hydro-electric and coal-fired generating plants received a similar rating. While it's natural to focus on the largest facilities, smaller installations - particularly electric transmission sub-stations are particularly vulnerable to sabotage. The physical perimeter security of these, mostly unguarded, installations warrant upgrades from chain-link fencing to pre-cast concrete wall systems.

Verti-crete security fencingThe Verti-crete masonry screening wall system provides a significant upgrade in physical security for public utility infrastructure facilities. Our 8’ walls can be topped with razor wire. Each column and panel is steel reinforced. Unlike competitor walls that are a mere 2” thick, our wall panels provide a full 4 inches of thickness, providing twice the durability and strength. Our concrete wall systems are engineered to meet AASHTO Guide Specifications for Structural Designs of both Sound and Screen Walls. As an added benefit our walls are ascetically pleasing, making them ideal for physical perimeter security applications in upscale environments.
